The PADI IDC - What is it?

IDC stands for Instructor Development Course and it is made up of two parts: Assistant Instructor and Open Water Scuba Instructor training. Most candidates take both sections together over 16 days followed by the PADI Instructor Exam (IE) to become full PADI Instructors.

The IDC teaches you how to conduct all core PADI Courses from Open Water Diver through to Divemaster. You’ll learn the PADI Standards and Procedures and how to find information you need in the PADI Instructor Manual. The course consists of eLearning, classroom sessions, meeting with PADI staff, confined water sessions in our pool, and open water sessions from our dive boat. You’ll also review:

  • How to think like an Instructor
  • PADI Learning, Instruction and the PADI System
  • Risk Management and Diver Safety
  • The Business of Diving and your role as an instructor
  • PADI AWARE Conservation and Education Programs

In addition to studying these key topics you’ll be fine-tuning your in-water skill demonstrations and learning how to deliver clear presentations for Confined Water and Open Water dives as well as for Knowledge Development classroom presentations. Your confidence will grow and your in-water skills will reach professional levels.

Why do your PADI IDC?

To have a once in a lifetime experience with other instructor candidates from all around the world. Together you will learn how to teach SCUBA in a hands-on and fun way. The course will expand on your previously learned skills and also teach you countless new skills and techniques that you will use to sell, organize and teach PADI diving courses anywhere in the world. You won't just have a dedicated course director but a genuine and passionate professional whose goal is to help YOU become the best instructor you can be, not just to pass the instructor exams but to excel in the dive industry.

How long is the IDC?

The Instructor Development Course takes 16 days. This includes the Emergency First Response Instructor Training Course over 2 days.

We also offer, for no additional charge, a two day IDC Prep which will focus on dive theory (physics, physiology, equipment, skills and the environment, and the Recreational Dive Planner) and confined water skills practice.

For those wishing to take their training to the next level, you can upgrade and do the Master Scuba Dive Trainer (MSDT) prep program. This includes training qualifying you to teach 5 PADI Specialties and, depending on your schedule, assisting PADI Instructors with actual PADI courses to give you experience with students.

What happens during Nusa Penida IDC?

IDC Knowledge Development

The IDC begins with online eLearning from PADI. This can be completed in one of two ways.

Once you register and send payment for the IDC, you receive an email from PADI giving you access to the IDC eLearning. It is best to complete all of the eLearning prior to the start of your course as this gives you more time during the IDC to practice the skills that will distinguish you as an exceptional PADI Instructor.

If you do not have time to complete the eLearning ahead of the course, you will have extra homework each night as you will complete the eLearning section(s) that are required for the next day. Each eLearning segment represents an in-class presentation or workshop where the course director will clarify any and all information and apply it to your future as a scuba instructor.

You should also consider purchasing the Dive Theory Online from PADI. If you haven’t yet done PADI dive theory or if it’s been more than a year since you completed this during your Divemaster, the Dive Theory Online can help you to understand theory at the instructor-level.  This online program gives a straightforward review of dive physics, physiology, skills, equipment and the environment, and the Recreational Dive Planner (RDP).

IDC Workshops

A large part of the IDC involves role-playing workshops where you learn to Think Like an Instructor. You will play the roles of instructor, assistant, and student throughout your course. These situations give you a better understanding of the importance of communication while teaching and will help you to relate to your future dive students.

Here at Bali Aqua, we don’t just cover the basics in theory for the open water, advanced, rescue and specialty courses, but we dedicate time in the water to learn, practice and master the art of demonstrating and correcting problems. We don’t want you to only be comfortable with the skills on your assignment sheet but with all of the key skills in the PADI system. We focus on training candidates to be excellent instructors training the next generation of scuba divers, we don’t focus on merely getting you to pass the IE.

IDC Graded Presentations

During the IDC in order to demonstrate competence in teaching the PADI system there required graded presentations in open water, confined water and in the classroom. At Bali Aqua, before the initial scored presentation our course director will teach, demonstrate and help you prepare to ensure you have a solid understanding of the process. We also offer additional scored presentations so that our candidates build comfort and confidence in their teaching!

What are the benefits of doing my IDC at Bali Aqua Nusa Penida?

We have a dedicated classroom with all necessary PADI resources as well as indoor and outdoor study areas that are available to you whenever you need.

We have a dedicated training pool on-site with 1m, 2m, and 3m deep sections. Perfect for teaching any course and meeting Performance Requirements. The pool is available to you whenever you and your fellow candidates wish to practice skills.

We have 2 boats on our property. When it is time to go into Open Water, no additional transport is required, saving time to focus on your training.

We are the primary Tusa retailer in Indonesia. If you do not yet own all of the gear you will need for your new career in scuba diving, we can help you to find gear that will work for you and offer discounts on whatever you purchase.

We always remember the FUN part of diving and teaching. For example, our open water presentations are conducted from our boat and as long as our work is done, we will follow the training sessions with a dive. We don’t want you to forget your passion for the ocean while you are doing your IDC!

Additional training is available after successfully passing your IE. You can take Specialty Instructor Training and also stay for additional time to team teach with our Instructors and get real-world training with actual scuba students.

Our Course Director is passionate about conservation and saving the ocean! For those electing to the MSDT Prep after the IE, we will teach the AWARE Dive Against Debris and AWARE Shark Conservation instructor courses for no additional charge. This will give you the ability to teach 2 additional specialties and is a great way to show future employers and students that you are serious about the environment and marine conservation.

Remember that the IDC is not just a learning experience. You will develop a relationship with your Course Director as well as the instructors and staff at Bali Aqua. You will also make friends for life with your fellow candidates as you take this leap into a new career and new life together. It’s a life-changing experience you won’t forget – and it’s only the first step in your new career.
